The ambition

In South Africa, the retail sector is a vital component of the economy, contributing significantly to employment and GDP. However, the industry's energy needs are evolving, driven by several factors including economic growth, urbanisation, and the increasing adoption of technology. As South Africa's retail industry continues to expand, so too does its energy consumption. The sector encompasses a diverse range of businesses, from small convenience stores to large shopping malls and supermarkets. These establishments require a reliable and substantial energy supply to power lighting, refrigeration, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems, and increasingly, digital infrastructure.

By adopting innovative energy solutions and embracing sustainability, retailers can not only meet their energy demands but also reduce costs, enhance their resilience against power disruptions and lowers their carbon footprint. The transition to a more energy-efficient and sustainable retail sector is not only beneficial for businesses but also essential for the long-term economic and environmental health of South Africa. As the industry continues to evolve, the integration of renewable energy and advanced technologies will play a crucial role in shaping the future of retail energy management. Palm Sands is one of the innovative retailers leading the way in adopting a more sustainable energy transition.

The solution

RenEnergy’s engineered installation is meticulously designed to address the unique challenges of a shopping centre, such as varying roof heights and the fluctuating shading patterns throughout the day. By optimising these factors, we ensure the highest possible energy yield, maximising the return on investment.

In a public building like a shopping centre, safety is paramount. That's why we have incorporated additional fire safety measures, providing peace of mind to both operators and visitors. Our solution includes a bespoke 643.5kWp roof array, tailored to the specific architecture of the shopping centre. Five grid-tied inverters were integrated to enhance efficiency and cost savings.

The inclusion of a 1.6MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) further strengthens the energy infrastructure. This system not only provides a stable and reliable energy supply, mitigating the risk of power outages, but also enables the shopping centre to manage energy consumption more effectively. By storing excess energy generated during peak sunlight hours, the centre can reduce its reliance on the grid during high-demand periods, leading to significant cost savings and improved energy resilience.
