Frost and shine: solar energy's winter performance

As the Western Cape transforms into a snowy winter wonderland, many wonder: Can solar panels still produce energy efficiently in these frosty conditions? Let’s dispel a common winter myth. The essential fact is that solar panels rely on light, not heat, to generate power.

Winter often ushers in more cloudy days, potentially affecting solar energy output. While summer is abundant with sunny days, winter is often characterised by grey, overcast skies. Despite this, most solar panels still generate energy on cloudy days. This is because light and UV rays penetrate through the clouds, allowing solar panels to continue producing power, albeit with a 10 to 25 percent drop in efficiency depending on cloud density. Modern solar panel technology is designed to minimise this loss, ensuring a steady energy supply even in less-than-ideal weather conditions.

A common concern is whether snow accumulation on solar panels hinders their performance. The good news is that snow generally poses minimal issues for solar panels, for several reasons. Solar panels are installed at an angle that encourages snow to slide off. Wind also helps to clear away accumulated snow. As a result, snow rarely stays on panels for long periods. Even in regions with heavy snowfall, the panels are usually not completely covered for extended durations.

Moreover, solar panels are pressure tested to withstand the weight of heavy snow. Interestingly, the reflective quality of snow, known as the albedo effect, can enhance the amount of light that reaches the panels, potentially boosting energy production.

Solar panels are designed to be low maintenance. Nature itself often helps keep them clean as rain and wind wash away dust and debris, maintaining their efficiency. Melting snow can clean solar panels, much like it cleans a car's windshield. Thus, the safest and most effective way to remove snow is to let it melt naturally.

If a significant amount of snow accumulates, you can get rid of snow by hand. However, it's safer to hire a professional due to the risks associated with working on a snowy or icy roof. Investing in solar power remains beneficial and productive throughout the year, even in the snowy winter months.
